Saola – The Asian Unicorn

1992 में Vietnam के dense forests में scientists ने local hunters के घर पर कुछ unusual horns देखे. Unhone जब DNA test किया, तो पता चला कि ये किसी unknown species के हैं. यही थी Saola की discovery — एक ऐसा mammal जो science के लिए बिल्कुल नया था.

इसका body dark brown होता है aur face par white patches होते हैं, जो इसे और भी mysterious बनाते हैं. Saola shy aur elusive है — camera traps ne भी बहुत कम बार इसे capture किया है. Scientists ne अब तक सिर्फ कुछ ही बार इसे live देखा है.

Habitat & Lifestyle

Saola dense forests में रहता है, mostly high altitude aur moist mountain regions में. Ye herbivore है — leaves, fig, aur small plants खाता है. Ye solitary creature है aur humans se दूर रहना पसंद करता है. Daytime में छिपा रहता है aur dusk या dawn में active होता है.

Why the Name "Asian Unicorn"?

Vietnam aur Laos के jungles में हर साल हजारों snares लगाए जाते हैं — aur यही इसके लिए death traps बन रहे हैं. आज Saola को Critically Endangered list में रखा गया है, aur scientists मानते हैं कि wild में शायद कुछ ही दर्जन बचे हैं.

Conservation Efforts

Saola Working Group (SWG) और IUCN ने मिलकर कई projects शुरू किए हैं ताकि इसकी आखिरी population को बचाया जा सके. 2020 में plan बना था एक Saola Conservation Breeding Center बनाने का — ताकि बचे हुए individuals को सुरक्षित environment में breed कराया जा सके.
